Pregnant Bank Robber Sought in North Carolina

Police are looking for a pregnant woman they say tried to rob a North Carolina bank at gunpoint but left empty-handed after answering her cell phone.

Fayetteville police spokeswoman Teresa Chance said Wednesday the woman had a handgun and demanded money when she entered a Carter Bank & Trust branch at 9:43 a.m. the previous day.

But she got distracted when her cell phone rang.

Police said she began talking to the caller and left the bank without taking any money.

Did anyone else read this and immediately envision the trailer it would have as a mainstream comedy, possibly starring Kate Hudson?

"Teresa Chance has a big problem..."

CUT TO: Hudson looking at her pregnant belly in the mirror:

HUDSON: I'm hideous!

"But that was just the beginning..."

LANDLORD: Who's the father?
KATE HUDSON: He's...out of the picture.
LANDLORD: Sorry, no bastards in my building...We need you out of the apartment by Friday.

"Now, to protect her new family, she's going to take the biggest chance of her life..."

CUT TO: Kate Hudson walking into a bank, pregnant, with a gun.

KATE HUDSON: Okay, everyone put your hands in the air, I guess, or something!

Kate's cell phone rings.

DOCTOR (on phone): We have some test results for you!

KATE HUDSON (into phone): Can't this wait? I'm sort of busy now, and I really have to pee!

BANK CUSTOMER: Do we still need to keep our hands up!

CUT TO: "The Fugitive"-style scene with cops standing around on a manhunt.

"But can a single gal take on the long arm of the law alone?"

SHERIFF: I need a hard target search of every Maternity Store, Baby Gap, ice cream parlor and public restroom in that area!

CUT TO: Hudson running into a door or something, like they do in every comedy trailer. (Here we'd also cue in one of those songs that's in every comedy trailer, like "Got My Mojo Working," "Walking on Sunshine" or that one that just goes "Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!")

CUT TO: Hudson talking to her Mom from a pay phone.

KATE HUDSON: I just want to do what's right for my son!

KATE'S MOM: First, you just have to do what's right...

"From the producers of some crap like 'Bride Wars', Kate Hudson, Tommy Lee Jones and Annette Benning star in 'Expecting Trouble.' Rated R for dick and poop jokes."

Their Brand is Crisis

Interesting posts about brands that will no longer exist after 2010. Some are kind of bittersweet. (I once worked at a Borders Books, and have fond high school memories of hanging out in their Mission Viejo store drinking coffee and reading books for free.)

One that I was surprised and delighted to see, however, was Crocs, the loathsome shoe company responsible for arguably the most irritating, ugly footwear in history. I mean, look at these fucking monstrosities. It's like wearing a MySpace page on your foot.

Or is that just this author's interpretation of the face dude's make when we relieve ourselves. He's like the Mona Lisa of illustrations warning you not to pee on to wires.

Gotta Be Honest...This Could Kill Twitter for Me

Oprah's Twitter page is gross.

http://twitter.com/Oprah

I hate everything about minor celebrities like Ashton Kutcher attempting to ride Twitter to 12 extra seconds of notoriety.  (Make no mistake...This is not about charity or technology or anything else.  Ashton makes shit movies and shit websites and he is just latching on to a fad a few years late so that he can get on Larry King.  It's cynical and pathetic.  John Krasinski's on Twitter, too, but you don't hear him blustering about it every five minutes, because he can talk about his hit show and the movie he just directed.)

But honestly, major celebrities with splashy Twitter ego pages may be even worse.  The one thing saving it for me is that I just don't have to follow any of these people, so I can sort of block it out.  But Diddy and the guy from "My Boss' Daughter" pontificating to CNN about technology like they're Jobs and Wozniak is just a lot to stomach.

Shorter George Will: "Men should dress like Fred Astaire! Video games rot your brain! Now get off my lawn!"

Denim is the infantile uniform of a nation in which entertainment frequently features childlike adults ("Seinfeld," "Two and a Half Men") and cartoons for adults ("King of the Hill"). Seventy-five percent of American "gamers" -- people who play video games -- are older than 18 and nevertheless are allowed to vote. In their undifferentiated dress, children and their childish parents become undifferentiated audiences for juvenilized movies (the six -- so far -- "Batman" adventures and "Indiana Jones and the Credit-Default Swaps," coming soon to a cineplex near you). Denim is the clerical vestment for the priesthood of all believers in democracy's catechism of leveling -- thou shalt not dress better than society's most slovenly. To do so would be to commit the sin of lookism -- of believing that appearance matters.

Jesus, this guy needs help. It's like one of those rare, asexual outbursts from Humbert Humbert. Maybe people like jeans because they are comfortable, George, and they wear them around town because they're not overly concerned with impressing your ignorant, crotchety old ass. Now go have an Ensure and a smile and leave the observational comedy to under-85's, anyone really whose understanding of American pop culture extends beyond the fucking Howdy Doody show.

300 Million for a new "Tron" movie? What else do I get with that?

The middle of an article from the Vancouver Sun contains this ditty: "Vancouver post-production units are salivating at the prospects presented by the Disney remake of Tron, which carries a whopping $300 million budget and opportunities aplenty for effects and digital polish." If Avatar's big price tag was a typo, I can only assume this is as well. It's the only thing that makes sense!

I mean, the original looks cool, and features Jeff Bridges. But come on. Are there THAT many people who will even recognize the name?

Apparently, we're NOT supposed to say "Great boobs!" to strangers on the street...Who knew?

Newell, who's been asked "Are they real?" more times than she can count, seconds Seery's advice.

"We've sensationalized the whole plastic surgery industry with shows like 'Extreme Makeover' and 'Nip/Tuck,' so now people feel they can discuss it, even with complete strangers," she says. "But it's none of your business, and it's extremely offensive to pry. What if I was a cancer survivor?"

The whole article, about how you should go out of your way to give people who have had plastic surgery compliments that don't make them feel awkward, is pretty ridiculous. But this paragraph was the worst.

Ms. Newell, no offense, but you got fake boobs. You are not a cancer survivor. It may not be classy to point out a stranger's fake boobs in public...but it's still not anything remotely like being a cancer survivor. I mean, don't you get work done on your breasts so people will notice them?

I'm not saying that means it's okay to sexually harass women who have had implants. At all. I'm just saying that it's not like you have cancer.

Houston lawmaker asks: 'What's Medicaid?'

At a hearing Thursday of the House Committee on Human Services, Elkins and other members of the panel considered more than two dozen bills related to Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program.

Three hours into the hearing, Elkins asked: "What's Medicaid?"

The Houston Republican continued: "I know I hear it — I really don't know what it is. I know that's a big shock to everybody here in the audience, OK."

He could have kept quiet. He could have asked an aide. He could have Googled it. Instead, he asked the question into the microphone in the middle of a public hearing.

Medicaid, for the record, is the federal-state health insurance program for low-income people and people with disabilities. Elkins is new to the Human Services Committee. However, he's served in the House since 1995, where one of the main tasks is crafting the state budget.

A quarter of the state budget is Medicaid.

Did that student say "What's a battle?"

No, he said "What's that rattle?"

Sounded like "battle" to me...

The Non-Scavenger's Manifesto

That is the challenge and the payoff and the thrill: the never knowing, then the waiting, then the finding out. Can you handle uncertainty?

This is the magic, the apotheosis, of the random. In a paved world, modern scavengers reclaim discovery. Adventure. Self-reliance. Self-sufficiency.

The modern scavenger reclaims the quest.

Some scavenge for fun. Some scavenge to save. Money. The world. Their souls. While consumers around us drown in debt, we liberate ourselves with every cent we save while liberating would-be trash. We know the difference between brand-new, full-price products and their dented, scavenged counterparts is —

Debt.

Some scavenge to recycle. Repurpose. Reduce. Reuse.

Some scavenge to revolt.

Some scavenge to survive.

Some scavenge for the sake of spontaneity. That is another primal ecstasy that consumer culture has quashed. Consumer culture wants consumers to imagine themselves free and democratic, decisive and bold. Consumer culture teaches that choosing the color of your phone is creativity. Up to a point, it is. A tiny calculated creativity comprising elements designed and sold by corporations. Control disguised as creativity. A short-leashed independence based on your ability and willingness to buy. But what is missing from this picture?

It's funny: Consumers think they're free.

Why is AlterNet so insistent that I start going through trash bins? This is seriously the third of fourth "you should really start dumpster diving" article I've seen on there recently.

I'm not saying you shouldn't do anything to try to conserve resources and be less of a wasteful American consumer.

But if we're going to solve the considerable environmental, economic and social problems we're facing as regards excess consumption and waste, we need PRACTICAL solutions. Not encouraging more Americans to forage for scraps in the trash. I'm betting most of them are like me, and prefer to spend their weekends NOT exhausted and running from security guards whilst coated in refuse. Thanks all the same.

Glenn Beck is a character being played by Paul Giamatti in the greatest prank movie ever mounted, right?

I'm not sure how many of you caught Glenn Beck's Fox News special on Friday night, "You Are Not Alone." I certainly didn't. I caught up with clips from it over the weekend, and needed some time to PROCESS what I had seen.

When you first see this clip, you can't help but be distracted by the fact that Beck is a bad actor and an utter fraud. He's not feeling the emotions he play-acts here, and he's not even doing a halfway-decent job of feigning them. I seriously think I could do a better job of pretending to be worked up over my love for America. (Maybe I'll try it on This Week in YouTube...hmm...) That's somehow even more insulting.

It's only after seeing it a few times that I realized how CREEPY the whole thing is, and how unsettling it makes life in modern-day America that this vapid blubbering actually RESONATES with some of my fellow citizens.

Yes, I watched it a few times. I've found Beck a loathsome little man for a while now, but I found this clip particularly disturbing. It's like watching an image beamed down from an alien planet, or some wretched dystopian future. If you were making an Orwellian satire of this moment in history, you could not render our media in a more over-the-top fashion. This is it. Beck here makes the propaganda guy from "V for Vendetta" look like Edward R. freaking Murrow.

At one point, Beck pretends (badly) to have the spontaneously realization that he sounds like a televangelist. It's an odd moment, because that's obviously the sort of pose he's trying to adopt (though most televangelists go about it in a more natural, charismatic fashion). You're wondering why someone who even pretends to have informed opinions about world events would want to invite comparison to charlatans like Benny Hinn, who yell at strangers and hit them with sport coats for a living. I guess that's what passes for austere sagacity in Beck's mind. Frightening.

If there's one thing that always amuses me, it's writing that is both sloppy and pedantic at the same time.

If you surf the Internet, you've seen the ads for IQ tests which claim: Barack Obama's IQ is (the numbers vary from 135-171); Joe Biden's is 150; Hillary Clinton's is 155 and so on. Naturally, Republicans are rated much lower and a fake article on the presidents' IQ once claimed that George Bush's IQ was the lowest of all. The ad goes on to ask-Are you smarter than...? Well, I am and I can prove it unlike all these so-called claims of how smart our newly elected president is.

This whole article is glorious. See, because Alicia Colon's thesis is: "I am smarter than Barack Obama." And in the course of "proving" this thesis, she makes a metric ton of logical and grammatical errors.

Care for another example?

"Many of my alleged intelligent friends told me that it was that memoir, Dreams from My Father that convinced them of how bright Obama is."

Alleged friends? She heard a rumor that these people were here friends, yet she's uncertain whether or not the friendship genuinely exists?

Okay, okay, one more...

"Besides how can you conclude that the planet is undergoing rapid climate change when we've only been documenting those records for a few hundred years? The planet was warmer before there were human beings on it."

The planet...was warming...before there were human beings on it...Oh yeah, this person's smarter than the first black president, a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School (and a former Constitutional Law professor AND the first black president of the Harvard Law Review).

But is he in Mensa? Case CLOSED.

Streamy Award Nominees Announced. Congrats to @zadi, @feliciaday, @tayzonday, @alexalbrecht, @garyvee and anyone else I missed!

Lots of great shows among the nominees. On one hand, it's a bit disappointing, conceptually, that SO MANY nominees for web television are stars from...regular television. And movies. Felicia Day aside, shouldn't web shows have their own stars? Otherwise, isn't it just TV that didn't quite make it on to television, as opposed to some new kind of format? But on the other hand, I can't deny that Paul Rudd was hilarious on "Wainy Days," NPH was great in "Dr. Horrible" and though I haven't seen "Gemini Whatever," I'm sure Rosario Dawson was considerably fetching. So I guess the panel behind these selections did the right thing - nominate the best stuff they saw without any kind of outside considerations.

On the Carpet with Gary Busey and Larry the Basic Cable Guy

Here's some footage of me talking to the, um, celebs at the Comedy Central Roast of Larry the Cable Guy. In all seriousness, Doug Benson is a really nice dude and HI-LARIOUS. And Gary Busey is crazier than even this video makes him look.

Perez Hilton: Coming Soon: Plinko Academy

Jada Plinko Smith's controversial school in Calabasas, the New Village Leadership Academy, is thriving!

The actress turned musician turned producer opened the doors to the experimental Scientology Academy last fall after more and more parents requested for their kids to join the home-schooling program Pinkett Smith had started for her two children!

"More and more parents were like, 'Can we come?' Then my house started to fill up. We had like 20 kids and I said, 'We might as well start a school,"' Jada said on the conception of the Academy.

I think that's how Harvard was founded too, right? "Hey, we might as well start a school!"

Based on this article, I can only assume that the Smiths are teaching kids how to discover who they were in past lives or travel to the Omega Quadrant or something. There's no way this is a real school for the learning of actual things. You'd be better off sending your kids to the Derek Zoolander Center for Kids Who Can't Read Good.

Yale student sues airline for $1M over lost Xbox

A Yale University student from Ohio has filed a lawsuit seeking $1 million from US Airways for a video game console he says was taken from his luggage.

Twenty-one-year-old Jesse Maiman alleges that during a flight from New Haven, Conn., to Cincinnati in December, his Xbox 360 with a specialized hard drive disappeared from his luggage.

Still not sure who to blame in $10 million suits over lack of girlfriend and Cheeto stains on shirt, pants.

Fantastic Four Reboot Rumor

They are saying that “word around town” is that 20th Century Fox is looking to reboot the Fantastic Four franchise. The reboot would be a eying a tone that is “less bubble gum” and more along the lines of what Iron Man was, with enough edge to keep fans interested and enough mainstream appeal to find big box office success. And it makes sense, seeing as the two Tim Story directed movies were decidedly goofy, earning mixed reactions from die-hards and casual moviegoers alike.

Yes, please. Not sure it has to go TOO serious, but I'd like to see an FF movie that at least gets Dr. Doom right. One of the all-time great comic book villains...I wasn't really feeling the dude from Nip/Tuck in this part...

We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Radioactive Penises

Did Juan from Manolith just confirm my theory?

And I quote: "I don't want to sound judgmental here, but if you see "The Watchmen" and feel the need to giggle at the sight of Dr. Manhattan's penis, or comment on how you did not appreciate seeing it later, you kind of need to grow up."

Imagine No Religion

A wide-ranging study on American religious life found that the Roman Catholic population has been shifting out o of the Northeast to the Southwest, the percentage of Christians in the nation has declined and more people say they have no religion at all.

Fifteen percent of respondents said they had no religion, an increase from 14.2 percent in 2001 and 8.2 percent in 1990, according to the American Religious Identification Survey.

I guess this part was always more likely than that whole "no possessions" part. I mean...John...it's a catchy tune and all...but come on...

Quick Maturity Check

I don't want to sound judgmental here, but if you see "The Watchmen" and feel the need to giggle at the sight of Dr. Manhattan's penis, or comment on how you did not appreciate seeing it later, you kind of need to grow up. I mean, it's an animated penis. It has a place in the story and a reason to be there. It draws attention to two things:

(1) Dr. Manhattan is god-like, but he's still a real man with a real connection to the human race. His body is not entirely vestigial.

(2) Superheroes are frequently depicted as larger-than-life in comics, whereas "Watchmen" ponders what they would be like if they were, in fact, real people. Seeing Dr. Manhattan's genitals draw us back into this idea, reminding us that his heroics and supernatural abilities are nevertheless seated in a being that is tangible and recognizably human.

We won't think you're gay just because you looked at a cartoon penis in a film. Grow the F up.

Gingrich Floats Possibility of 2012 Presidential Run

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday he'd seriously consider running for president in 2012.

With the mantle of the Republican Party still unclaimed, Gingrich told reporters in Ashland, Va., before a speech to Randolph-Macon College that he and his family would examine the political environment in early 2011, and "look seriously at whether or not we think it's necessary to do it."

Oh, I hope he's serious! I predict this will go very well. For Jon Stewart and Bill Maher.

New Dylan album coming in April?

Bob Dylan will release a new studio album in late April, Rolling Stone reports. The magazine quotes an anonymous insider who says the 10-song set's arrival "came as a surprise" to those around the folk-rock legend. The currently untitled album reportedly centers on "raw-country love songs, sly wordplay and the wounded state of the nation."

New Dylan album full of "raw-country love songs" and "sly wordplay"? I'm in.

Spinal Tap: New tour, less hair! | PopWatch Blog | EW.com

Spinal Tap announced at a press conference yesterday that they will be going on tour later this spring –- but not as Spinal Tap. Confused? Let me explain. The core Tap trio of actor-comedians, Christopher Guest (aka "Nigel Tufnell"), Michael McKean ("David St. Hubbins"), and Harry Shearer ("Derek Smalls"), are hitting the road for a 30-date "Unwigged & Unplugged" tour, which starts on April 17 in Vancouver, B.C., and ends in Milwaukee on May 31. And they will be playing songs from both 1984's This Is Spinal Tap and 2003’s A Mighty Wind, in which the three played aging folkies The Folksmen. BUT they will be leaving their Tap outfits –- and, in Shearer’s case, the foil-wrapped vegetables -– behind and perform as themselves. The Tap are also set to release a new CD on May 25. I can’t confirm at the moment as to whether they will try to “milk it for a few more years in Europe.”

Not sure I totally get this...They're going on tour playing Spinal Tap songs, but as Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest? I'm not saying it won't be pretty awesome, but why do it this way? It obviously won't be as much fun as seeing them as Spinal Tap. I don't know...sort of smacks of self-importance.
