The Pink Panther, which I saw on an airplane, is fully deserving of its spot on the list, and I'm actually astonished that it placed so low. Thank You for Smoking, which I saw in the theatres, was a great disappointment to a guy hoping for a clever satire, but it's not in anything approaching the same league of badness as the Pink Panther.

Wordplay I enjoyed. As for your assertion that "not every silly diversion enjoyed by the privileged is fascinating enough for its own documentary", I disagree - almost anything is, if approached from an interesting enough angle, fascinating enough for its own documentary, in the same way that almost everything's fascinating enough for its own book (I read one recently called "A History of Falling" which was a history of the kind of sports that involve falling through the air - skydiving, bungee jumping, and the like. It was enjoyable, een though I have little or no actual interest in any of the sports being covered).

Oh, now that I look at it, I also saw Tenacious D. It also wasn't very good. I'd rate it in the same mediocre but not absolutely terrible class as Thank You for Smoking.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9281117.post-1167613898920945182006-12-31T17:11:00.000-08:002006-12-31T17:11:00.000-08:00"Wordplay" is a lot better than it may sound. Your list is the best of its kind. To paraphrase Mencken, you make your prejudices plausible.

I'm afraid my movie love died years ago. After being buried every year by the crushing stupidity and creative bankruptcy of the pants load that Hollywood shakes out onto us, there's only one thing worse, and that's reading or hearing critics with a media megaphone start their best lists (an oxymoron?) by saying how they were surprised how many excellent films they actually saw this year.Peter L.
